About me, my old life and my work

Jo Paine

My name is Jo, and I am a fully qualified, BACP registered counsellor and psychotherapist.
My earlier working life was mainly office-based, with a little toe-dip into teaching, followed by around
ten years in retail.  You can see my qualifications and training if you click here.

Back to now!  I offer a warm, confidential and non-judgemental space in my ‘Horsforth haven’ room or online.

My practice is called Elpis Therapy - indicating something we all need at times of emotional distress: ‘hope’.

As a relational, integrative counsellor, I will help you work through whatever issues you bring to our shared space, using the most appropriate therapeutic approach.  I recognise that what works for one person might not work for another, and no two people feel the same about what might appear to be a similar ‘thing’ on the outside.  After all, you are the expert on you.

Whether you are coming alone or as a couple, you have taken the first step, by recognising that you need some help.  So now, by working together, I will help you see that you can change how you feel about yourself, your life, and your relationships.  Whatever you bring to our sessions, we can work towards the outcome you need, be it along the lines of self clarity, a complete emotional overhaul, or techniques to manage conflict or improve teamwork within your partnership.

I have helped people cope who have been bereaved by illness and suicide, who have been affected by self harm and eating issues, who have lived through childhood sexual abuse and trauma, and who are experiencing anxiety, work stress and relationship difficulties.  In addition, I am proud to be a Dementia Friend, and you can discover more on that by clicking the logo below.

And yes, you are meeting a total stranger when you walk into my room - but remember, so am I!

I offer a free, no-commitment 20 minute phone call or Zoom, to ensure we both feel happy working together, and also to check that our diaries can align.
